Throughout the UK, both businesses and individuals have been affected by COVID-19 in almost every aspect of our lives.

Whilst it is tempting to bunker down at home and shut out the outside world until the crisis abates, this is not an option for everyone, especially those involved in buying or selling properties.

Can my conveyancing still go ahead?

Whilst some people have chosen to pause their property transaction there are some who may still wish to proceed as normal. For example, if you are moving into an empty property, there is no reason the transaction cannot go ahead as confirmed by the Government guidelines. The same can be said for investment properties where there is no-one physically moving house.

The start of 2020 saw an increase in property transactions compared with the same period in 2019 until the lockdown was imposed. Although people may put off making offers on new properties at present, there is still a significant amount of housing stock on the market and once restrictions are lifted it is anticipated that there will be an explosion of activity.

What can I do to assist my conveyancing transaction?

If you are planning on selling your property in the near future, now may be the right time to consider instructing your solicitor in order to prepare the pre-contract documentation to ensure that the transaction can proceed swiftly once you accept an offer. On average two weeks can be lost between instructing a solicitor, and contracts being issued due to the necessary paperwork being collated and the time taken for documents to be posted.
